The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) detected a magnitude 4.6 earthquake near the Manipur town of Ukhrul on Friday. According to NCS, the earthquake struck at a depth of 120 kilometres at 10 p.m.

The National Centre for Seismology tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.6, Occurred on 29-12-2023, 22:01:19 IST, Lat: 25.14 & Long: 96.54, Depth: 120 Km,Location: 208km E of Ukhrul, Manipur, India.”

As of yet, no casualties have been reported. More information is awaited.

Manipur experienced an earthquake just days after Assam was rattled by tremors on December 27. The earthquake struck at a depth of 20 km at 5:55 a.m. IST (Indian Standard Time). The epicentre of the earthquake was 42 km east of Tezpur.

On Tuesday, December 26, a low-intensity earthquake of a magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter Scale was detected near Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district, according to the NCS.

Meanwhile, at 1.10 a.m., an earthquake of 3.7 magnitude was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. The tremor occurred five kilometres below the surface at 33.36 degrees latitude and 76.67 degrees longitude, according to the NCS.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter Scale jolted Japan’s Kuril Islands on December 28.

Meanwhile, the dead toll from this week’s 6.2-magnitude earthquake in northwest China has increased to 149, with two individuals still missing. The quake, the worst in the region in nine years, struck around midnight on December 18 at a depth of ten km.
