Jason Cummings scored in second-half injury time to help Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) defeat Maldives’ Maziya S&RC 2-1 in an AFC Cup second round group-D match at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.

The Australian scored both goals as Bagan earned the full three points, bringing their total to six and keeping them atop the group league rankings. Maziya’s goal came from Tomoki Wada.

The first half was defined by two goals and a penalty miscalculation. Bagan dominated the game, holding over 65% of the ball and mounting multiple raids to keep Maziya at bay for the most part.

Jason Cummings (28′, 90+2′), a Scottish-born Australian forward, scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute. Maziya SRC nearly earned a point on Tomoki Wada’s goal (45′) in the first half, but the hosts won it right at the finish on Cummings’ second goal.

Mohun Bagan, presently top of the Indian Super League points chart, dominated possession throughout the game but unable to get through the Maldivian defence.

Maziya had a good chance in the first ten minutes when Hassan Raif Ahmed won the ball in his own half. Despite a nice run down the right flank, his teammates failed to arrive in time into the area, and striker Jason Cummings raced back to avert any danger.

Mohun Bagan needed a flash of individual brilliance to break the deadlock, and Jason Cummings delivered. The Australian international deftly twisted with the ball to create space, and his shot from outside the area struck the back of the net.

The Mariners had a fantastic opportunity to double their lead before halftime. Armando Sadiku won a penalty for Mohun Bagan, but they missed it by trying something unconventional. Instead of taking the penalty shot, Cummins attempted to lay it in the path of Dimitri Petratos. Sebastian Antic was the first to notice the ruse, arriving before Petratos.

It didn’t take long for Mohun Bagan to regret their decision, as Tomoki Wada’s spectacular long-range strike took the Mariners’ defence off unprepared. Vishal Kaith, the custodian, was unable to save Wada’s strike, and the first half ended with both teams scoring one goal.

Liston Colaco nearly put Mohun Bagan ahead early in the second half, but his attempt was blocked. Hussain Shareef made a fantastic save to deny the Goan winger another wonderful opportunity almost immediately.

Mohun Bagan had the better chances throughout the game, but the visiting squad held firm.

Substitute Sahal Abdul Samad made a significant difference as both teams were approaching a tie. His through ball found Cummings inside the box, and Cummings deftly placed it beyond Hussain Shareef’s near post to break the tie.

On the counter, Sahal Abdul Samad had a chance to make it 3-1, but he took too long to take his shot, and the defenders were able to stop his effort.

Mohun Bagan took all three points with a 2-1 victory in this tight match to maintain their lead in Group D. On October 24, they will face Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings in the AFC Cup 2023-25.
