On Saturday, September 2, India and Pakistan will renew their traditional cricket rivalry in the Asia Cup 2023 group stage. The high-voltage duel between two heavyweights is set to take place at Pallekele International Cricket Stadiums, but rain threatens to disrupt the game in Kandy.

The Balagolla storm is expected to bring heavy rain on Saturday, causing yet another upset for fans. Both teams are in Group A, where Pakistan defeated Nepal by 238 runs in the tournament opener on August 30. However, weather is expected to ruin India’s opening game once more.

According to Google Weather, there is a 56% to 78% chance of rain during the game, with heavy cloud cover all day. In the early stages of the match (around 3:00 PM IST), the temperature is expected to be approximately 25 degrees Celsius with 92% humidity. Another meteorological forecast (MET) predicts 68% precipitation one hour before the game, implying that both teams would most likely play on a wet outfield.

On August 31, rain also disrupted Sri Lanka’s opening game against Bangladesh at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. During the first half of the game, there were light showers that halted play for a few minutes. Pallekele will host both group-stage games for India (on September 2 and 4), while Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium will host six games, including the final. As a result, rain is expected to disrupt the bulk of Asia Cup 2023 matches.

Tickets for the India vs. Pakistan match were sold out within minutes of the promoters’ announcement. Despite the prospect of rain, supporters are expected to go to the stadium to see the highly anticipated match. If both teams reach the final on September 17, they will face each other three times in the competition.
