The palace says that the cancer is unrelated to the king’s recent treatment for a benign prostate issue. It did not specify what type of cancer the 75-year-old monarch had.

The King began “regular treatments” on Monday and would postpone public obligations while undergoing treatment, according to the Palace.

The King returned to London from Sandringham, Norfolk, on Monday morning, and the palace said he has begun outpatient therapy.

Although he will suspend his public appearances, the King will continue to fulfil his constitutional function as head of state, which includes paperwork and private meetings.

When the head of state is unable to perform official duties, a constitutional process allows “counsellors of state” to be appointed to act in place of the king.

It stated that King Charles “remains completely positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

Charles became King in September 2022, after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 96.

The news of the king’s diagnosis comes as his daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, recovers following stomach surgery that kept her in the hospital for two weeks.

The Statement from Buckingham Palace

US President Joe Biden expressed his concern and said he would speak to the King.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished the King a “full and speedy recovery”.
