Although it is unclear whether a definitive contract has been inked, Motorsport.com knows that negotiations are advanced and may be completed by the end of this week.

Ferrari has long been interested in Hamilton’s services, but its prior approaches have been turned down because the seven-time champion believes Mercedes provides a better path to success.

However, Ferrari chairman John Elkann is a big fan of Hamilton and, according to Italian media reports, has been negotiating a deal that would see Hamilton pair up with Leclerc starting in 2025, meaning Carlos Sainz would quit the club.

Last year, Hamilton signed a multi-year contract with Mercedes for 2024 and 2025, but it now looks that the second season was merely an option.

That implies Hamilton will have an escape clause, which means he will be eligible to join Ferrari starting in 2025.

Both Ferrari and Mercedes declined to comment on the matter.

Ferrari just announced a long-term contract extension for Leclerc, but Sainz’s future remains uncertain, since his contract expires after the 2024 season, with the Spaniard aiming for a two-year extension. Sainz has been mentioned as a potential driver for Audi.

In 2023, around the time he signed his new Mercedes deal, British media reported that Ferrari had made a contract offer to Hamilton, which Hamilton and Scuderia chief Frederic Vasseur bluntly refuted.
