Meta Platforms plans to launch a web version of its new text-first social media network Threads, seeking to acquire a competitive advantage over X, formerly Twitter, as the initial wave of users fades.
Threads will become more valuable for power users such as brands, company accounts, advertisers, and journalists with the release of the much-anticipated web version.
Meta did not provide a launch date, although Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated that it may happen soon.
“We are close on the web…,” Mosseri wrote on Threads on Friday. According to the Wall Street Journal, the debut might happen as soon as this week.
Threads, which debuted as an Android and iOS app on July 5 and quickly acquired 100 million users, saw its popularity dwindle as users returned to the more familiar platform X following the initial rush to explore Meta’s new offering.
However, in just over a month, its daily active users on the Android app fell from 49.3 million to 10.3 million.
