Mumbai Indians announced its new captain Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma for IPL 2024.

On Friday, the Mumbai Indians announced that Hardik Pandya will take over as captain of the team starting in IPL 2024, ending Rohit Sharma’s successful 10-year reign. The announcement was expected after Hardik Pandya decided to return to Mumbai Indians after guiding Gujarat Titans for two years and winning the IPL title in 2022.

“It is part of establishing a legacy and adhering to the MI philosophy of being future-ready.” The Mumbai Indians have always had outstanding leadership, from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who have all contributed to the team’s immediate success while also looking to the future. “Hardik Pandya will captain the Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season in keeping with this philosophy,” Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene declared.

The news concludes a decade of remarkable leadership by Rohit Sharma, who guided Mumbai Indians to triumph in five seasons during his ten years as captain. MS Dhoni equaled the amount of titles after winning IPL 2023, although the CSK captain has been in charge for 12 years.

There was a lot of curiosity after Hardik was traded back to Mumbai earlier this month. When Gujarat Titans hired him as captain in 2022, he was let go by the franchise. Hardik then guided the franchise to its first championship in 2022, before finishing second in 2023. The 30-year-old’s return to his old team sparked captaincy speculation, which was later confirmed on Friday.

As Rohit bids farewell to his time as Mumbai Indians captain, we look at some of the key figures that have characterised his captaincy legacy in IPL history.
