The launch of India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) service in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on February 12 will be observed by the leaders of the three countries, as New Delhi steps up attempts to expand its digital public infrastructure to new countries.

The inauguration of UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius would make digital payments available to Indian nationals travelling to the two countries, as well as visitors arriving in India.

“The launch will enable availability of UPI settlement services for Indian nationals travelling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius as well as for Mauritian nationals travelling to India,” the ministry said in a statement.
According to the statement, “The extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius will enable Mauritian banks to issue cards based on RuPay mechanism in Mauritius and facilitate usage of RuPay Card for settlements both in India and Mauritius.”

Earlier last month, France permitted the UPI to operate in the country. With the launch, Indian tourists may now book their visit to the Eiffel Tower by purchasing tickets online via UPI. France became Europe’s first country to embrace UPI. The official announcement was made in Paris during an event hosted by the Indian Embassy in France to commemorate India’s Republic Day.

The Eiffel Tower was the first merchant to accept UPI payments in France.

India has emerged as the leader in fintech innovation and digital public infrastructure, and Prime Minister Modi has emphasised “sharing our development experiences and innovation with partner countries,” according to a statement from the External Affairs Ministry.
