Vijayakanth, the founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and a Tamil actor, died on Thursday, December 28, at the age of 71, in Chennai, following an illness.

“Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilator support after being admitted for pneumonia.” “Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he died early on December 28th, 2023,” MIOT International said in a news release.

His final rites will be performed tomorrow evening at the party’s headquarters in Chennai.

Vijayakanth created the DMDK in 2005 and was the party’s lone winner in the 2006 Tamil Nadu legislative assembly election.

The party received 10% of the vote in the 2009 Lok Sabha election in Tamil Nadu, but it began to decrease in the early 2010s.

Vijayakanth, a former actor, is often referred to as ‘Captain’, including by his party, because to the success of his 1991 film Captain Prabhakaran, in which he played the principal character.

Vijayakanth appeared in 154 films during his career before entering politics. He served as an MLA twice after creating the DMDK, representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies.

On Thursday, regional and national officials expressed their condolences for Vijayakanth’s demise.

“The death of our dear friend Vijayakanth, affectionately known as Captain by Tamil people, is a loss to Tamil Nadu and the film world,” M.K. Stalin, chief minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK leader, said on X.

He went on to say: “As a tribute to Vijayakanth, his last journey will be given full state honours.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences on the demise of Vijayakanth. “A Tamil film legend, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions.” As a political leader, he was genuinely committed to public service, and his legacy will be felt in Tamil Nadu.”
