On Thursday, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi unveiled its first electric vehicle and stated its intention to become one of the world’s top five automakers.
The sedan, called the SU7, is a widely anticipated vehicle that is intended to make the most of the company’s popular phones’ shared operating system.

However, the car’s launch comes at a time when the world’s largest auto market is grappling with a supply glut and dwindling demand, both of which have fueled a brutal price war.

That didn’t stop Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun from announcing lofty goals such as creating a “dream car comparable to Porsche and Tesla.”
“By working hard over the next 15 to 20 years, we will become one of the world’s top 5 automakers, striving to lift China’s overall automobile industry,” Lei stated during the presentation.

Xiaomi, like several other tech companies, has been attempting to diversify beyond its main business into EVs, a strategy it first announced in 2021.
It has vowed to invest $10 billion in automobiles over the next decade and is one of the few new participants in China’s EV market, since officials are hesitant to add to the supply glut.
Lei stated at the launch event in Beijing that Xiaomi automobiles’ autonomous driving capabilities would be at the forefront of the industry.
The Xiaomi-branded automobiles will be manufactured in a Beijing factory with an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles by a unit of state-owned carmaker BAIC Group.
